Meet Jamie Burke, the Web 3 proponent behind Outlier Ventures

True to the ethos of Web 3, Swash collaborates with a web of thought leaders and innovators who share a common vision of a world with a democratised, demonopolised, and decentralised data economy.

Swash’s partners and advisors include pioneering data advocates and policymakers who leverage their expertise together with the Swash team to fulfil the needs of a distributed data community.

The Spotlight series introduces you to the people behind the movement to give you a better idea of what they’re working on, what excites them, and why Swash. Stay tuned for new releases every week.

Meet Jamie Burke, the Founder and CEO of Outlier Ventures.

One of the supportive thinkers in the Swash circle is Jamie Burke, Founder and CEO of Outlier Ventures, the leading Web 3 startup accelerator. Outlier Ventures supports ambitious founders working on building out the next generation of applications in crypto, the new data economy, DeFi, and NFTs.

Jamie is spreading the message about the Open Metaverse, bridging the virtual and physical worlds with crypto while finding and propelling 100 innovators each year through Outlier Ventures.

Here are some of the highlights from our recent chat with Jamie.

“The Web as it is, it is incredibly centralised, monopolied by a handful of platforms… not only have they become data monopolies, but also AI monopolies … Web 3 represents a genuine paradigm shift from the way the web is today,” according to Jamie.

Until now, conglomerates and monopolies controlled and monetised your data at will.

However, the emergence of Web 3 technologies wants to help you break free from unbalanced power structures while giving control and value back to the individual. This trend is continuing with crypto crossing the chasm from an early tech community to a more mainstream audience. Jamie sees the same evolution:

“We’ve seen in 2020 and 2021, a maturing of the technology stack, and it looks very likely that NFTs are the gateway drug for the mainstream to begin to adopt crypto… As a consequence, the principles of Web 3 around decentralisation, self-sovereign identity, the sovereignty of data and sovereignty of digital wealth.”

As awareness is key for adopting new technologies, decentralised solutions such as Swash have now reached the perfect equilibrium between their technical development and the openness and eagerness of individuals to embrace new solutions.

Let’s explore Jamie’s opinion of how Swash fits into the new data landscape.

“Swash is a key component of how we mainstream a new data economy… These kinds of killer applications that allow for the average person without a high technical barrier to be able to take back control of their data.”

We envision a world where everyone, regardless of their technical know-how, can access their data, join a community (cough-Data Union-cough), and collaborate with others to achieve the best solutions and opportunities.

New technologies “allow for a process of positive commodification, where people can turn that data into a positive commodity.”

Swash’s movement is in sync with these new open ownership models, creating the world’s first Data Union in the process.

As Jamie puts it:

“The idea of Data Unions is a very powerful one that people can understand, and I think a very sensible and practical way to allow for users to begin to take back control of data and to turn it into a form of revenue.”

The realm of data is evolving with high enthusiasm placed in the innovators shaping the space, but it won’t be possible without an aligned ensemble of key stakeholders.

Swash is proud to have free thinkers like Jamie and Outlier on board as vital partners in our journey as the new knowledge economy unfolds before our eyes.
