Swash Spotlight Series: Bruce Pon — Founder, Ocean Protocol

True to the ethos of Web 3, Swash collaborates with a web of thought leaders and innovators who share a common vision of a world with a democratised, demonopolised, and decentralised data economy.

Swash’s partners and advisors include pioneering data advocates and policymakers who leverage their expertise together with the Swash team to fulfil the needs of a distributed data community.

The Spotlight Series introduces you to the people behind the movement to give you a better idea of what they’re working on, what excites them, and why Swash. Stay tuned for new releases every week.

Meet Bruce Pon, the Founder and CEO of Ocean Protocol.

Today, Swash presents an interview with Bruce Pon, the Founder and CEO of Ocean Protocol, as he dives into his vision for the future of the internet, data, and the decentralised economy.

Swash’s web of experts have provided support in many different forms, and Bruce Pon and the rest of the Ocean team are no exception.

Bruce is a pioneer in the decentralised data space and is driven by similar goals to Swash, working to become a “connective tissue for a new data economy“ while “people share their data safely and receive compensation.”

Recently, Swash sat down with Bruce to discuss Ocean’s purpose, the crypto and DeFi landscape, the innovation coming into the space, and what the distributed and open data economy will look like in the not-too-distant future.

Here are the takeaways from our conversation.

”This space innovates at such a high speed that ideas are built into software and then released into real-world use cases… we’re finding that every month or so, there’s a new topic that catches people’s imagination.”

Recent months have attracted a wave of enthusiasts in the blockchain space, with the rise of leading digital assets (such as Bitcoin), Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), and the advancement of multichain interoperability. All ideas revolving around digital agency and redistributed wealth are now ready to better serve people and their interests.

”We are looking forward to having thousands of marketplaces spring up around the data economy and then for millions of people to discover the data and start to use it while solving many of the problems the world faces.”

At the core, Swash and Ocean believe in the power of aggregated data communities, serving the interests and motivations of individuals while promoting a healthy digital economy.

”A lot of the ideas… about giving people more control, taking power away from central authorities, trying out different ways to reward people for their intellectual property.”

Introducing an entirely new financial system built upon reliability, fairness, and decentralisation.

“Trying out different mathematical formulas for how you can create new financial systems. All of them are now being able to be tested on top of the blockchain rails because blockchain allows that capability.”

Blockchain is at the core of these new experiments, with major implications for the future of every business sector. Bruce has been discussing this since its inception:

“Four years ago, I was giving talks about the idea that blockchain would be a general-purpose technology… the beauty of general-purpose technologies is that once people start to understand it, it starts getting integrated into the fabric of systems.”

Unlocking the future of data value systems.

As Bruce sees it, blockchain “starts rejigging the processes, the technical, and the governance around certain areas that it touches… and then an explosion of new ideas and potential value for humankind.”

“The nature of blockchain unlocks all these ideas that we’ve been having about value, digital scarcity, digital ownership, identity.”

The entire industry is committed to turning these life-changing technologies into a reality, with people at its core.

“We now have tens of thousands of innovators, developers, and participants in this ecosystem who are experimenting with this in real-time at a clock speed.”

Swash’s movement is on par with Ocean’s goal to empower a new generation of people with digital sovereignty.

“We see that the mission of Swash aligns very closely with Ocean… It’s about getting people’s data in a way that has their consent and has the conditions of how they feel comfortable to share the data, but also provides an economic incentive for them to do so.”

Swash believes in the open data economy, where individuals and institutions benefit from an informed, consented, and fair distribution model.

That same view, according to Bruce, could have unparalleled impacts on humanity:

“The ability for people to monetise their data, I think, is going to be a fundamental pillar of an emerging data economy that allows for the agency of anybody on earth.”
