Swash Spotlight Series: James Falero — Finance Director

Swash’s troop of Swashbucklers doesn’t stop growing, with more new team members joining the mission to decentralise the new data economy for people.

This week’s Spotlight Series highlights another addition to the Swash movement, James Falero, helping Swash with all-things finance and compliance.

Discover more about James in a chat covering the state of crypto, how it is bolstering the rise of Web 3 tools, and Swash’s role in that transformation.

Meet James Falero, finance director at Ince Gibraltar and Swash director & MLRO

James started his career as an accountant, moving into senior finance positions at large law and investment firms in Gibraltar.

James got in touch with the decentralised emergence, ICOs, Web 3, and all things digital at his current position as a finance director at a consulting firm specialised in crypto.

He understands the challenges of crypto startups operating in a traditional finance world, helping them find tax-efficient strategies.

Swash chatted with James about the crypto industry, what developments he envisions for the future, and how data and the digital economy are bringing back power to the people.

Crypto has transformed the corporate world, according to James

Crypto has “modernised business.” Swash has seen the crypto transformation across sectors in a shift only comparable with the rise of the Web in the early 2000s.

Digital assets have “taken a very archaic system, which needed rejuvenation,” and promoted the appearance of more efficient ways to conduct business. Concerning data, crypto has enabled “better ways to store it and how that data is transferred from one party to the other.”

At the centre of it all sits the primary goal of the entire industry: more freedom for people, whether it is financial or personal.

Monopolies have profited on the back of people’s data

James supports Swash mainly due to the movement’s approach to people’s data as a whole.

For “a very long time, people have given out their data freely; it’s been taken away from them and monetised by other industries.” With Web 3, people can regain control and reap the rewards.

Swash comes in to boost data value for the people who create it

Swash is “empowering the generator of data, which are the individuals who feed that data into the system.”

Swash has moved from “exploitive ways” in dealing with people’s data into a fair system. This ecosystem enables creating high-quality data, which developers can build upon and expand the use-cases and monetisation of the original data, reaching even more people.

For James, Swash is “more about empowering the community, making the world a better place.”
